More Things I Learned From My Preaching Class

This post incorporates both reasons for preaching as well as suggestions to keep preachers from getting into trouble.

  • Preach and Teach to glorify God and honor His Word
  • Preach to reach the lost
  • Preach to please God – God is your primary audience
  • Preach to equip Christians for the work of the ministry
  • Preach to lift up the downtrodden
  • Preach to be more effective this time than last time
  • Preach to bring conviction of sin *You do not convict. The Holy Spirit brings conviction.
  • Humor and entertainment have their place but should not be first place
  • Preach to the spiritual weary
  • Make prayer a priority of your life
  • Make preaching and teaching the priority of your ministry
  • Preach your own sermons *If you use somebody else’s idea – give credit. Change it, adapt it, make it better to be used in your context.
  • When you preach or teach – don’t change your voice – don’t become someone else
  • Your authority comes from the Word of God and your testimony
  • Let God open doors for you
  • Magnify the name of Jesus
  • Don’t touch the money
  • Take a day off
  • Take a vacation
  • Keep dating your spouse – Take her on a date. Try to make date night weekly or bi-weekly.
  • Laugh
  • Never resign on a Monday
  • Don’t read anonymous letters – they are probably cowards anyway.
  • Your best friends should not be members of your own church
