Taking Out The Trash

Have you ever just been sitting at home and you smell something funky but you just can’t place where the smell is coming from? You walk around trying to find where the foul odor is coming from and then you look in your kitchen trash can. The culprit has been hanging out in your kitchen trash can. The smell is strongest there. Then it dawns on you that your wife may have asked you to take out the trash and you failed to do so or you forgot.

This is also true in our lives. As disciples that are passionate in their relationship with Christ, it is important to be attentive to hearing the voice of the Lord when He is speaking to us. God is the potter and we are the clay. God is constantly conforming us to the image of Christ. Sometimes that means taking out the trash.

What does that look like? Well, sometimes God tells us to get rid of things. These things may not necessarily be bad but they are distracting us from our true focus which should be Christ. Sometimes God shows us things in our lives that we need to get rid of. Habits, thoughts, relationships, things…God ultimately wants to give us the desires of our hearts but that will only be when our desires become His desires. It is not always fun cleaning house but it is important to do. The same thing with cleaning stuff out of your life.

Maybe there are habits that are unhealthy. Maybe you have relationships in your life that are more discouraging than encouraging. Maybe you have things in your life that you can’t part with and they have some sort of control over you. You do not have to be a slave to these things. Give them to God and let Him take out the trash and conform you more to the image of Jesus.
