The original title of this sermon is: The Church Part 2.  Subtitle: The American Dream is not God’s dream.

Acts 2:42-47

vs. 42 – The Believers – the church devoted themselves to the apostles teaching. They were eager to hear what the apostles had to say because they knew the message was from the Lord. The apostles or in today’s context, the pastor speaks with the authority given to him by God.

Fellowship is more than just shaking hands at church. Fellowship is more like intentional hanging out. There is purpose for fellowship. Hebrews 10:24 – provoke one another to love and good works. Intentional conversation needs to happen. Wherever. Whenever. Over lunch, over coffee, over dessert whatever. They also shared of their material possessions.

They (the church) devoted themselves to communion – participation in the Lord’s Supper and prayer. The Lord’s Supper should not be so frequent that it becomes routine. The Lord’s Supper should also not be so infrequent that it becomes forgotten. We can all pray more. We more than likely pray less than we should which means we do not pray enough.

vs. 43 Awe- Amazement  When is the last time you were in awe about what God was doing in your life? When is the last time you were just in awe about God?

vs. 44-45 The selling of personal items and possessions was not a mandate forced upon the believers by the elders of the church. All giving was joyful and purely voluntary.

vs. 46-47 The church started to meet outside of corporate worship in individual homes. There was fellowship – Christ centered conversation. They talked about God and lifted praises exalting God. People were being saved on average…daily.

All glory goes to God.

*The American Dream

The American Dream is a lie. It is deceitful. It has you striving for the accumulation of stuff. The AD created a system of competition. If you do not win, you are made to feel inferior. The AD is a selfish lifestyle. How do you know if you are selfish? How do you fight the deception of the American Dream?

John Piper, said we need to live with the mindset of a wartime lifestyle. Everything we own is given to us by God. Our material goods are to serve as resources with the gospel in mind. We need to constantly be thinking about the gospel. We have money as a resource to be a blessing and share the gospel for God’s glory not our glory.

The American Dream mindset as infected the American Church. Last year 10,000 missionaries had to come home because there was not enough money to support their ministries. The Church needs to stop being focused on what it wants and focus on God. A church becomes gospel centered when the people that make up the church become gospel centered.

Jesus said – It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. DON’T WASTE YOUR LIFE! For where your treasure is there will your heart be also.
