Pac-Man is a game about consumption. Pac-Man must eat all the dots in the maze before he is killed by the ghost monsters. Sounds simple enough right? Eat all the dots in one maze and then move on to the next. Consume or be consumed.
Have you ever stopped to consider that Pac-Man is how most people live out their lives? The American Dream teaches people to consume and consume some more. When you think you are finished consuming, consume more. Many people have caved to the idea of the American dream and it controls how they live their life.
People will bounce from job to job for whoever offers the best paycheck. People will go into debt just for the sake of having an item that they think they need. Confusing needs and wants will be evident in how you spend your money. Bigger, better, faster, shinier, prettier, newer is the way the game is played.
I don’t know many people that own a car for more than 5 years before they trade it in. Why? They have to have a newer model. People need to upgrade their cameras, computers, cell phones, televisions, video game consoles, and more. People do not often keep an item until it breaks anymore. They would rather have the newer one right now instead of later.
Like Pac-Man, the American dream has taught us to never be satisfied with what we have. We trade in cars, tech, houses, and we even try to trade in our spouses. There is a problem that people do not seem to grasp. Church pay attention.
You do not own your stuff. God owns it and you are a steward of what he has allowed for you to own. Paul says, “What do you have that you did not receive?” God has given us all things. God is the Creator of all and the rightful owner of all. God just allows us to manage his things. How are we doing with that?
Do not be consumed with keeping up with the Jones. Be consumed with passion for Christ. Hebrews 12:29 says, “Our God is an all consuming fire.” Be consumed by that fire. May God be so desirable in your life that he is made evident and great by your conversations and how you live your life. Be consumed with the Gospel.
