Greater Things

The title for this sermon is Greater Things. These notes are for your own personal Bible study.

Our text for this sermon comes from Acts 19:1-10.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1 – Be imitators of me as I am of Christ.

Because Paul believes exactly what he wrote in 2 Timothy 3:16.

Be imitators of me as I am of Christ. Be encouraged by my faith. Be encouraged by my life.

May the way I live and the words I say encourage, influence, push, provoke, spur you to live passionately for Christ. I want my relationship with Jesus to be so inspiring that it makes you want your own relationship with Jesus.

Acts 19:1-10

vs 1 – Apollos was at Corinth. Paul went to Ephesus. Apollos left Ephesus for Corinth, Paul left Phyrgia for Ephesus. Their paths almost crossed. They barely missed each other.

Paul in Ephesus:

vs 2 – 7  Did you receive the Holy Spirit? They believed in God. They were disciples of John. The students looked like the teacher. They were true disciples. Disciples that did what disciples do. They preached repentance. All they knew was repentance. They didn’t know about Jesus. They didn’t know about the Holy Spirit.

Paul got to explain Jesus to them. They had never heard the gospel. They did not know about Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross. They did not know about his resurrection. They did not know that Jesus ascended into Heaven and now sits at the right hand of the Father.

They did not know that Jesus said in John 14:12 –

Greater works than Jesus?

Not really greater than Jesus but greater works with Jesus!

What was Jesus really saying?

When Jesus left eternity and came to earth – he became the God-man, fully God and fully man. Being human meant that Jesus could only be in one place at one time. Jesus had to leave earth so that he could send the Holy Spirit.

Because the Holy Spirit is here – there is nothing the church cannot accomplish. Whatever God tells you as the church – you can accomplish as long as you are in tune to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:11 – The same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in you! And not just you….

The same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in every bonafide, born again believer.

If you have been regenerated, redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, you have the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:31 – If God is for us, who can be against us?

If you are a member of FaithPoint Community Church, this is what you signed up for:

We believe this is what God has called us to do:

  • Make disciples
  • Train men
  • Develop pastors
  • Send missionaries
  • Plant churches

That seems like a huge vision. That seems hard. That seems difficult. That seems impossible.

We don’t want to do easy, comfortable, routine. We don’t want to think we can do anything without God. We don’t want to do anything if God is not in it.

That is awesome.

It needs to be hard. It needs to be difficult. It needs to be impossible.

Because: For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
