We all go through life and can expect changes to happen. For example, God gives you deeper insight into a Bible verse more so than you realized was there. Maybe you have matured and the TV shows and movies you were watching just don’t appeal to you anymore.
This year, I want to make a change too. I want to live my life with more boldness. I want to live with more confidence. I want to live a life with intention, direction and at the same time, be above reproach.
2013 is the third year that I have written about the word that would be the momentum or diving board I needed to launch me into the necessary changes that needed to take place in my life.
In 2011, my One Word was Walk
. That word was chosen because I want to be known as a man that walked with Jesus. I want to be known for being a good husband, good daddy, a good friend, a good pastor, and an all around godly man. I want to live in such a way that when I die, there is no doubt as to the quality of man that I was. My life has purpose and meaning. I do not want to do anything to taint, mar, or damage the life that God has called me to.
In 2012, my One Word was Push
. I wrote about pushing through my own limits. It is far too easy to become comfortable and complacent. I do not want to fall into that trap. I want to persevere, strive, endure, push to the end. I want to push past obstacles and pre-conceived notions and mindsets that hold me back from being everything that God has called me to be.
My One Word for 2013 is Focus. This is why:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
(Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV)
This is what I have come to realize. If my focus is on Jesus, then everything in my life falls into place. I am not seeking after other idols because Jesus is beautiful, majestic, glorious and holy. I am not playing the lottery, jumping into some get rich quick scam, manipulating people or cheating on my taxes to try and get money because I am content with where He has me and He is my provider and sustainer. I will stand strong when life throws me a sucker punch because Jesus is my rock.
For me to live to show this is true in my life, I have to live intentionally. We as people get so easily distracted. We chase after the next new TV, the new cell phone, the clothes, the stuff. We can’t wait to go to the new restaurant that just opened up down the street. I had to think about this question: Am I really being compelled by Jesus or am I being controlled by my desire for technology and food? How you answer that question shows you what you really desire.
I want to live passionately, bold, confident and unashamed for Jesus because of the relationship that I have with Jesus. Therefore, I need to be focused on Jesus.
I expect big changes in my life to happen because I desire to focus on Jesus.
- I expect my Bible study time to increase
- I expect my marriage to get stronger
- I expect to be a better godly daddy
- I expect my prayer life to change for the better
- I expect Jesus to grow me as a pastor
- I expect my faith to increase
