Raising Children In The Faith

There is a heaviness or weightiness if you will to Proverbs 22:6. It says:

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
(Proverbs 22:6 ESV)

To train up a child in the way of the Lord, means that I am already walking in the way that I should lead my child. You cannot lead someone to a place that you yourself have never been. In other words, you as a parent cannot lead your children to follow Jesus if you are not already following Jesus.

My greatest desire as a dad is to see both of my boys wrecked and redeemed by Jesus.

Don’t get me wrong. I want my boys to do well in school. I want them to go to college if the Lord leads them to college. I want them to find a job that they enjoy doing and I want them to marry the women God brings them.

However, if that is all I want for my boys, I am totally shallow as a dad. None of those things will be of any importance if my boys do not know Jesus.

I want my boys to love Jesus. I pray as often as I can that Jesus will save them at an early age. I want them to love Jesus and love the church. I want for them to have a desire to serve the church. They should have compassion and share the gospel with lost people. I want them to know how to love and treat the women that God has chosen for them to marry. I want my boys to passionate disciples of Jesus.

They will not learn these things if they listen to all the mixed messages that our culture sends them on a daily basis.

As their dad, I must model it for them. I must be their godly influence. They must first see it in me. I must be a godly man so they will see what a godly man looks like. I must be a godly husband so they will know how to be a godly husband. I must be a godly daddy so they will know how to be a godly daddy.

To raise children in the faith, you must first be a man of faith. If you want your kids to walk with Jesus, you must walk with Jesus.

Be a man of the gospel. It is the best thing you can do for your children.
