Under Attack

The culture at the time of the church in the book of Acts is not much different from our culture today. When you pick up Acts, you can see that the church was under attack because they believed in Jesus.

In Acts 4: Peter and John were taken to the court of the Pharisees to have judgment cast upon them. The Pharisees charged the men to never again preach in the name of Jesus.

The core truths of what the church believes are still under attack today.

  • There is a denial that Jesus is both fully God and fully man.
  • There is a denial that all three persons of the Trinity exist.
  • There is a denial of Jesus’ incarnation; that Jesus came to this planet and took on flesh and became a missionary to us.
  • There is a denial of the atonement; the fact that Jesus, when He died on the cross and took our place so that we would not have to endure the wrath of God.

Groups still challenge and attack the Bible. Everything from the authorship of Scripture, virgin birth, miracles, and resurrection of Jesus are all debated.

This should come as no surprise to us. The same arguments and the same debates that were brought up in the times of the early church are the same things that are brought up for debate now.

What you need to know is:

  • Jesus is truth.
  • The Bible is truth
  • The gospel is truth

Jesus WILL build His church and He is not going to let the media, athiests, new age gurus, or some anti-Christian blog posts to destroy it.

Some people just want to debate you. They want an argument They consider it a sport. The best thing you can do for them is not engage in the debate. That is such a waste of time.

What you should do is pray for them. Pray that God would allow the gospel to break through their intellectual wall and pierce their stone hard heart and that they would be brought to a state of repentance and Jesus would redeem them and bring them into His kingdom.

Jesus is going to hold us accountable but not for how well we debated. We are held to a high expectation of obedience and making disciples.

If you are truly a follower of Jesus, then your life should imitate the One you follow.

Question: How does your life show that you are a follower of Jesus?
