Notes for FaithPoint

FaithPoint Logo 1Last week, Pastor Derek preached for us. As part of our series, God of This City, he shared a little about what people in our city thought about Jesus. In Galatians 4, Pastor Derek showed us that because of Jesus, we are heirs with Christ and that because of our adoption into the family of God, we can go to the throne because our Daddy sits on it.

The title of this sermon is God of This City: What Do People Say About The Church?

Our text for this sermon is:

Everyone will get 2 3×5 cards. On one card; make a list of people that you know that currently do not attend church and are lost. On the second card; make a list of people that you know that do attend church but are not plugged in. These people are not regular attenders and may at one time have been burned by the church and are now disconnected.

You will find out what the cards are for at the end of the service.

We asked people in our city what they thought about church?

These are the answers:

  1. Churches have too many cliques

  2. Churches have a holier than thou attitude

  3. The younger generation needs mentors and leaders

  4. Churches are good. The people are not.

  5. Churches need pastors that preach what the Bible says and what the Holy Spirit leads them to; not what people want to hear.

  6. The church needs to follow the Bible.

  7. All churches seem the same. – people are judgmental, racist, homophobic, political. The church survives off the youth group.

  8. Churches seem closed to visitors and new members. They want to keep to themselves.

  9. Churches are called to go reach out

  10. Churches need more passionate fire and brimstone preachers that are not afraid to talk about hell, repentance, grace and forgiveness

Looking at these answers: We are left with a new question. What is the church?

To really help us see what a church is, we first need to see a little bit about what a church is not.

A church is not a country club

A church is not a political arena

A church is not a fashion show

A church is not a building

Now let’s take a look at what a church is.

A church is made up of people who were broken and chasing their sin but because of the blood of Jesus that was spilled out on the cross, have been chosen by God to be redeemed, given a new life and now pursue Jesus.

  • Colossians 1:2

  • Matthew 9:12

  • Romans 9:13-16

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17

  • Luke 9:23

  • Luke 14:25-33

A church goes and finds sick people and introduces them to Jesus who can make them well and then teaches these people to go and do the same.

Matthew 28:19-20

Acts 1:8

A church is led and guided by the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 2:20

A church has been saved by, lives out and shares the gospel.

Ephesians 2:1-9

A church is equipped for the work that God has given them.

Ephesians 2:10

Ephesians 4:12-13

A church has a mission.

Jesus’ mission is the church’s mission. We are told to make disciples all over the world, baptize them and then teach them to obey all that Christ has commanded us. This is our mission.

We wanted to break this down and put it in words that are immediately applicable and tangible. We want you to grasp hold of this mission and know that we believe so strongly in our mission that we would ultimately die for the cause of Christ.

When we were going through the Book of Acts, we pulled out five things that we believe support the mission of Jesus and we pray that we are bold, faithful and diligent to work hard to complete the mission.

The five things that we have adopted as the mission for FaithPoint are:

  1. Make Disciples
  2. Train Men
  3. Develop Leaders
  4. Send Missionaries
  5. Plant Churches

Every name that you wrote down on your cards is a person that needs the gospel to infiltrate their life. They need Jesus to wreck them and pour out grace and mercy on them and rescue them from sin, death, and hell. We want to see Jesus save many people in our city and we want to be a part of their lives as they become passionate, devoted disciples of Jesus.
